How to restore Chrome’s most visited pages to new tab page after update 29

I opened a new tab this morning on Chrome and had quite a shock.  Instead of seeing my most visited pages I got the Google search box.  I also saw “Chrome has updated” across the bottom right of the browser and quickly concluded the Chrome update 29 was the culprit.

Now I know Google is a great search engine and that it also happens to make Chrome but moving me an extra click or search away from my favourite sites felt a little mean.  Especially when I found no option in the settings to switch back to the old behaviour.

Luckily this super user Q&A quickly solved my problem.

  • Goto chrome://flags/
  • Search (Ctrl+F)for “Enable Instant Extended API”
  • Select “Disabled”
  • Scroll to the bottom
  • Click “Relaunch”
